Award in honor of Chief Rayon’s contributions, leadership, lifetime of achievements and dedication to the fire service.

FSTINet

The California State Firefighters’ Association (CSFA) and the Fire Services Training Institute (FSTI), in mutual agreement with the Los Angeles Area Fire Marshal’s Association (LAAFMA), are pleased to announce two new communication networks, FSTINet and CalArsonNet.

This network will serve as a resource tool between training professionals. Network members have found answers and procedures from others.

There are three primary objectives of this list:

  • Improve communication among training professionals within the California fire service.
  • Create a new informational and educational resource tool for fire professionals.
  • Provide an open forum for the exchange of views and opinions on issues that affect the California fire community.

Deer Valley Press

Chief William Teie’s Deer Valley Press wildland fire training textbooks have been recognized worldwide for decades as some of the best wildland fire training publications available. Now in the fourth edition, Firefighter’s Handbook on Wildland Firefighting, Strategy, Tactics and Safety was originally published in 1994 with thousands sold to firefighters and fire agencies worldwide. In 2010, Leadership for the Wildland Fire Officer – Leading In a Dangerous Profession was first published as the accompanying text to the Handbook with the second edition released in 2020. Today, both publications are published through Fire Protection Publications, Oklahoma State University.

Howard W. Rayon
 Distinguished Service Award

The first FSTI Distinguished Service Award was presented during opening ceremonies of the 2009 California State Firefighters’ Association Annual 87th Conference in Sacramento to Chief Howard W. Rayon. A resolution was then presented naming the award in honor of his tremendous contributions, leadership, lifetime of achievements and dedication to the fire service. Howard was a significant influence in the development of FSTI and served as corporate secretary until his death on 19 October 2009.

Through the Santa Barbara County “ReadySBC Alerts” system, public safety agencies have the ability to send alerts to individuals, homes and businesses through multiple contact paths such as voice, text and email. Receive notifications about a potential safety hazard or concern via voice, email, or text communication methods that you have registered.

Table Talk

Table Talk with Chief Ron Coleman is hosted by Michael S. Williams of the Fire Service Training Institute. Table Talk is based on Chief Coleman’s book The Chief’s Clipboard – 20 Years of Ronny J. Coleman (2006). Interviews are set in active fire stations throughout California and cover various topics relating to the fire service including operations, prevention, training, leadership and management.

Briefing Room

The Briefing Room is one of four websites sponsored by the Fire Services Training Institute designed for the collection of articles, research documents and interviews with subject matter experts within the public safety community. Members can also access Mike’s Library. The site contains a “body of knowledge” that supports our research and available for member use.

FSTI has provided training to the volunteer public safety community since 2006. It has been our mission to provide high quality training to firefighters while at the same time promoting community safety.

Fire Services Training Institute (FSTI) is a non-profit public benefit corporation with both state and federal tax exempt status.
