Fire district maximizes the use of Fire Prevention Week materials

title

By Lisa Braxton

When Patrick Tourville, deputy fire marshal for the Simsbury Fire District in Connecticut, begins preparing for Fire Prevention Week, he assembles a combination of free educational materials, including NFPA safety tips sheets, and items for purchase, such as FPW in a Box. “I have six stations in my town,” he says. “I distribute the materials to them. We have an open house at one of our stations at the center of town right at a busy highway so that we have high visibility.”

He says firefighting and home safety demonstrations are conducted and stations in the firehouse are set up where safety tips sheets are handed out. “The free items are nice,” he says. “We can personalize them, get our brand out.”

Tourville says materials remaining after the event are used at the schools to continue reinforcing the fire safety messaging. “For me to order six of FPW in a box is nothing,” he said. “We make it go as far as we can.”
