After working all day, volunteer and career firefighters joined NFPA for a fire safety workshop in Jacksonville, NC. With the new ISO changes that allow fire departments to include their fire safety programs as part of their fire station ratings, we are seeing more opportunities to educate firefighter, fire safety educators, and also fire marshals on ways to reach their citizens. NFPA has been piloting workshops in rural communities to reach fire departments and inspire them to provide education to their community. With the Fire Prevention Week campaign launching this week: “Don’t wait Check the Date- replace your smoke alarms every 10 years” we are building on the lessons around smoke alarms. This workshop gave us the chance to talk about programs for kids that are featured on Sparky Schoolhouse and include Learn Not to Burn and our cool new apps and music videos. To celebrate May as Electrical Safety Month we featured the Electrical Safety Community Toolkit. For older adults, we have online resources for Remembering When to prevent fires and falls. Thanks to Onslow County Fire Marshal’s Office for helping us reach more educators with this innovative approach to fire education.
