Bring NFPA along as the summer travel season gets underway

title

By Lisa Braxton

Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of the summer vacation season. According to AAA, an estimated 37.2 million Americans–a 4.7 percent increase over last year–will travel 50 miles or more between May 21 and May 25, Memorial Day. Of those travelers 89 percent will drive to their destination.

Now is a great time to review NFPA’s Car Fire Safety tips sheet, which advises on what to do if your car is on fire, how to prevent a car fire, and knowing the danger signs of problems with your car.

If you need to keep the kids busy on the car ride, Sparky the Fire Dog® offers all kinds of games, stories, and activities. En outre, the Sparky School House includes a storybook app and eBook that are both educational and fun.

And if you’ll be staying at a hotel, you’ll want to review the Hotel and Motel Safety tips sheet, which advises choosing a hotel/motel that is protected by both smoke alarms and a fire sprinkler system, reviewing the escape plan posted in the room, finding the exits, and leaving right away if the alarm sounds.
