FDA raises awareness of surgical fires during Fire Prevention Week

Por Lisa Braxton

It’s National Fire Prevention Week. El U.S. Food and Drug Administration and its partner organizations want to raise awareness about the risks of surgical fires and promote the adoption of risk reduction practices throughout the healthcare community with the Preventing Surgical Fires Initiative.

Surgical fires are fires that occur in, on, or around a patient undergoing a medical or surgical procedure. An estimated 550 to 650 surgical fires occur in the United States each year. Despite the fact that the root causes of surgical fires are well understood, they still occur. The initiative provides information on surgical fires, vídeos, checklists, and resources and tools for preventing surgical fires. The initiative is celebrating its third anniversary.
