Educator tells why he likes Remembering When

For Captain Sheldon Guertin (pictured at right), life safety educator with Kamloops Fire Rescue in British Columbia, being a public educator is about sharing ideas while improving delivery of his program. That’s why, he says, participating in the Remembering When™ Scholarship Conference last year was so important to him. During the conference, teams from a number of communities received training to reach older adults through group presentations and home visits.

Remembering When, which is centered around 16 key safety messages–eight fire prevention and eight fall prevention–was developed by NFPA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help older adults live safely at home for as long as possible.

“At times it seems that I am a one-man show,” Guertin says. “The team concept of Remembering When has been helpful.” His partner agency is Oncore Central Services, which assists older adults in daily living.

“I could not have asked for a better partner. Their whole mission is to keep older adults in their homes as long as possible by providing non-medical services, including housekeeping, yard work, snow removal, and friendly visits.”

Through the team’s efforts, Remembering When group presentations have been made in assisted living facilities and Oncore’s network of volunteers have conducted numerous home visits with older adults.

“Overall the Remembering When program has been a huge success in our community and a great tool to help protect one of our most vulnerable populations,” Guertin says. “I like to refer to the Remembering When program as a ‘high rewardprogram.

If you’re interested in applying for the Conference, you have until tomorrow. Applications must be submitted by Wednesday, Agosto 12, 2015.
